All visitors to Tajikistan must hold a valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond the intended date of entry and at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps. Passports should be in good condition, as damaged documents may be refused.
Tajikistan has a relatively open visa policy compared with some neighbouring countries. Citizens of several countries, mainly within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), can enter Tajikistan without a visa for short stays. These include nationals of countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, and Uzbekistan, who are generally permitted visa-free entry under bilateral agreements.
Citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and all EU member states do require a visa to enter Tajikistan. However, most travellers from these countries can apply for a Tajik e-visa online in advance, without the need for a letter of invitation. The e-visa is typically issued for short stays and can also be combined with a permit for travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) if required.
The standard single-entry e-visa fee is around USD $30. Travellers planning to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), including the Pamir region, must also apply for a GBAO permit at the same time, which usually costs an additional USD $20.
Visa validity and permitted length of stay depend on the visa type issued. E-visas and tourist visas are typically valid for a single entry and allow stays of up to 30 to 45 days, starting from the date of entry. Travellers must enter and exit Tajikistan within the dates specified on their visa, as overstaying can result in fines or difficulties on departure.

Tajikistan e-visa applications are usually processed within 3 to 5 working days, though processing can take up to 10 days in some cases. While approvals are sometimes issued more quickly, travellers are advised to apply at least one to two weeks in advance to allow for possible delays or requests for additional information.
