Antarctica has no immigration authority or passport control of its own. Travellers must carry a valid passport and meet the entry and transit requirements of the countries through which they travel, including the country from which their Antarctic expedition departs.
Passport and visa regulations for gateway and transit countries are subject to change, and airlines may have different requirements. Information is correct at the time of writing; travellers should check the requirements for all countries on their itinerary before departure. Antarctica does not issue visas. Travellers must meet the visa requirements of the countries used to reach and leave Antarctica, most commonly Argentina or Chile. Requirements depend on nationality and itinerary.
Visits to Antarctica must be appropriately authorised under the Antarctic Treaty system. Passengers travelling on an organised expedition are normally covered by permits or authorisations arranged by their tour operator and should confirm this with the operator before departure. Independent expeditions may require authorisation from the relevant national authority well before travel.
